Which one is right?

  • A lottery is a form of gambling which involves the drawing of lots for a prize.
  • In the Lottery this definition means a form of gambling of one’s life which involves the drawing of lots for the prize of their death.
  • The act of Hazing is any action or situation, with or without the consent of the participants, which recklessly, intentionally, or unintentionally endangers the mental, physical, or academic health or safety of a student.
  • The act of Hazing is the sacrifice and denial of themselves for their cause refers to the way the lottery sacrifices an individual in order to be able to be able to feed the town in the harvest season.

A  lottery relates to Hazing due to the fact that an individual may not necessarily consent just as well as they may due to the fact this is a ritual, just as Hazing is. They also correspond due to the fact; in a lottery after a participant or participants are selected to their fate, they can either be subjected to embarrassment, ridicule, degradement, or even death.

Many people believe that the Lottery and Hazing are in fact very serious issues. In our society today, many people just want to hit it rich and be separated from others by being instantly rich. Just as many people enjoy hazing because they are distinguished as separate and belong to a special group, order, or class now. In Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” we have come to find to look at the word and expression of a lottery in a different light. The lottery in this story is bad… It means a pick of DEATH!

In the Short Story by Shirley Jackson we see how a popular tradition of that culture is wildly accepted by others in this culture. It is almost a way of life that these villagers are accustomed to. This is very much similar to the debate of Hazing in many colleges today. Hazing  has been  widely accepted for many years is can be said to be a so called “tradition” If you are not hazed you can’t be a part of group just as in the short story by Jackson we see to not be a part of the lottery wasn’t possible. Even the little kids took part, no one was exempt.
